The number of clients in the Assistance System for Victims of Human Trafficking has continued to rise this year as well.

At the end of June 2017, the number of human trafficking victims in the assistance system had broken the 200 mark for the first time. When you include those children of adult victims who also require assistance, there are a total of about 270 people in the system as a whole.

In 2017, 89 people had been proposed for inclusion in the system by the end of June. 55 new clients were accepted, six of whom were underage when they were registered. The information can be found in the overview (in Finnish) published by the assistance system for victims of human trafficking.

A record-breaking number of asylum seekers arrived in Finland in 2015, and the majority of the new clients also came seeking asylum. Most of them became victims of human trafficking while abroad.

16 of those who became clients in 2017 were victims of abuse indicative of human trafficking in Finland.

Anyone may contact the assistance system if they encounter a person whom they suspect may be a victim of human trafficking. You can contact the assistance system by email, phone or via the www.humantrafficking.fi/in_english website.

New project to promote anti-human trafficking efforts

In September, the Assistance System for Victims of Human Trafficking will launch the IHME project, which seeks to improve the operational preconditions for anti-human trafficking efforts in Finland. The project’s goals include providing training for preliminary investigation authorities and revamping the ihmiskauppa.fi website. The project has received EU funding from the Internal Security Fund (ISF) – Police.
