Person applying for an extended permit: from 1 April 2018, you do not have to give your fingerprints when visiting our service point

Publication date 28.3.2018 16.14
Press release

If you are applying for an extended permit after 1 April 2018, you do not necessarily have to give your fingerprints when visiting the service point of the Finnish Immigration Service.

You do need to give your fingerprints if

  • your fingerprints are not in the Register of Aliens
  • it has been over five years since your previous residence permit card was granted
  • you are applying for a permanent residence permit or a long-term resident’s EU residence permit for third-country nationals
  • there is another specific reason for the renewal of your fingerprints.

For the time being, you always have to visit our service point even if we do not need your fingerprints.

If you do not have to give your fingerprints when applying for an extended permit, your old fingerprints from the Register will be added to your residence permit card.

In the long term, you can apply for an extended permit entirely online

Our electronic case management system will be updated so that, in the future, you can apply for an extended permit entirely in the e-service.

Then, applicants who have logged in the e-service with Finnish online banking credentials, a citizen certificate or a mobile certificate usually do not have to visit our service point at all.

We will inform you separately, when this is possible.
