Eight applicants for the post of Director of the Asylum Unit of the Finnish Immigration Service

The application period for the post of Director of the Asylum Unit of the Finnish Immigration Service ended on Wednesday 20 March 2019. A total of eight applicants had applied for the post by the application deadline.

The position opened due to the retirement of Esko Repo, the long-time director of the unit.

The applicants were as follows:

  • Anu Tirkkonen, MA
  • Annika Ropponen, Bachelor of Law
  • Juha Kurenmaa, General staff officer
  • Marko Saareks, General staff officer
  • Mika Toivonen, Officer’s degree
  • Eija Niitynperä, M.Soc.Sc.
  • Antti Lehtinen, LL.M.

There was one further applicant (M.Soc.Sc.) who did not want their name published.

The new director will start in late summer

The new Director of the Asylum Unit is responsible for the unit’s operations; its main task is to process applications for international protection from interview to decision. The Asylum Unit has offices in Helsinki, Lappeenranta, Raisio, Oulu and Kuhmo. The unit employs approximately 300 people.

The intention is for the Director of the Asylum Unit to start work on 1 August 2019.
