Death in Hennala: No errors in the reception centre’s handling of the situation

The Finnish Immigration Service has investigated a case in which a young asylum seeker at the Hennala reception centre in Lahti died in the early summer.

There has been much discussion about this case, particularly in social media, and it has been rumoured that the centre may have been negligent in its care of the client.

On its own initiative, the Finnish Immigration Service investigated the case and evaluated operations at the Hennala reception centre.

In the view of the Finnish Immigration Service, no errors occurred in the Hennala reception centre's handling of the case, and there is no particular cause to criticise its operations. This view is based on a report from the Hennala reception centre, the patient information that was recorded, and other information on the case available to the Finnish Immigration Service.

Medical specialists had responsibility for treatment in this case. Supervision and assessment of specialised health care is not within the purview of the Finnish Immigration Service. The Finnish Immigration Service is transferring the case to the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health for investigation to determine all the facts of the matter.
