The amount of assistance for voluntary return to Iraq and Afghanistan will increase

Persons who choose an assisted voluntary return to their home countries will now get a larger amount of assistance than before. The amount of assistance will increase from 25 September 2017 onwards. The new amounts will be used in all assistance decisions made on 25 September 2017 or later. If you have applied for assistance for voluntary return, you do not need to take any action because of these changes.

The amount of cash assistance for those who return to the countries in category A will increase. Additionally, the amount of in-kind support will increase for all countries of return. The maximum amounts of increased assistance will also be raised.

Category A countries:

Afghanistan, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Haiti, Iraq, Kenya, Laos, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Nepal, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Cash assistance will increase as follows:

Category A Before

Starting from 25 September 2017

Normal assistance

1,000 1,500
Assistance for a child 600 750

The amounts of cash assistance granted for countries in the B, C and D categories will not change.

In-kind support

The following in-kind support can be given from 25 September onwards:

  • EUR 2,500 per returning adult, of which EUR 200 will be given in cash when the person departs
  • EUR 1,500 per returning child, of which EUR 100 will be given in cash when the person departs

It is possible to get in-kind support instead cash assistance.

Increased assistance

From 25 September onwards, regardless of the country, the maximum amounts of increased assistance will be:

  • EUR 2,000 per adult and
  • EUR 1,000 per child.

Increased assistance is only available for persons who meet the requirements laid down in the Ministry of the Interior Decree 845/2015 on assistance for voluntary return.
