To find up-to-date information about the processing queue for students’ residence permit applications, follow the website of the Finnish Immigration Service.
We will inform our customers of the processing queue regularly with a customer bulletin. You can also follow our updates on Twitter.
If you have submitted your application using the e-service Enter Finland you can check its status in the e-service.
Applications for a first residence permit
On 11 October 2018, there are 751 pending applications for a first residence permit for studies.
Applications that have arrived in the agency on 21 August 2018 are currently waiting to be processed.
Applications submitted through the e-service are transferred to the Finnish Immigration Service directly once the applicant has visited a Finnish embassy or consulate abroad in person. It takes a few weeks for paper applications to reach the Finnish Immigration Service.
Residence permit applications must be submitted to a Finnish embassy or consulate in a country where the applicant resides legally.
Applications for an extended permit
On 11 October 2018, there are 656 pending applications for an extended permit for studies.
Applications submitted on 30 July 2018 are currently waiting to be processed, with the exception of occasional older applications.
Residence permit applications for studies are always considered urgent
The Finnish Immigration Service processes and decides all applications for first and extended permits for studies as urgent without any separate requests.
Applications are decided in the order they are submitted. E-mailing or calling the Finnish Immigration Service will not speed up the processing of your application.
Which factors affect the processing time?
Generally, the Finnish Immigration Service makes a decision on the applications for a first residence permit in about one month after their arrival in the agency. Applications for an extended permit are decided within about two months.
The processing time may be longer if we need to ask you for additional information or if the application is incomplete. We will contact you if we need any additional information for your application.
You should not compare your processing time to the processing time of other applicants, because the processing time varies depending on the amount of investigation needed for each application.
