Press release

About 9,000 pending applications were transferred from the police to the Finnish Immigration Service at the beginning of 2017, when all permit matters for foreign nationals were concentrated at the agency.

The applications that were transferred were applications for

  • extended permits
  • permanent permits
  • residence permit cards
  • EU-registration and residence cards for family members of an EU citizen

The transferred applications do not include asylum applications. These have always been processed at the Finnish Immigration Service.

Processing situation of the applications:
  • A total of about 80 applications that were submitted to the police are currently waiting to be processed.
  • Currently, we are processing approximately 1,340 applications and in addition to this, 40 applications are waiting for a partial decision from the Employment and Economic Development Offices (TE Offices).
  • At the beginning of this year, we have made decisions on 7,540 applications that were submitted to the police.

This bulletin is updated once a week. Follow Migri.fi! We recommend that you do not ask after the status of your application by phone because our customer service does not have more accurate information than this customer bulletin.

Aim: applications processed during the summer

Our aim is that all the applications that were transferred from the police will be processed by the end of June.

One of the reasons for delays in the processing of the applications has been the fact that the paper applications submitted to the police had to be converted into an electronic format. This has now been done.

In the electronic system, the applications are divided into processing queues based on the grounds for the applications. Applications are taken from the queue to be processed according to their submission order so that the applications that have been pending for the longest are processed first. The transferred applications are currently being processes.

You will receive the decision by post, not from a service point

The service points of the Finnish Immigration Service do not function in the same way as the police service points. When the decision is ready, you should not visit a service point. You will receive the decision by post to the address that you have provided.

If we need additional documents for your application, we will ask you for them. If you do not receive a request, you do not need to contact us or submit any additional documents.

You cannot speed up the processing of your application by calling us or visiting a service point and a request to expedite an application is effective only in exceptional situations. There is also a backlog of requests for expedited processing.

Temporarily longer processing times

We will make decisions on the applications that were transferred from the police as fast as possible, but naturally the processing times will temporarily be longer. The estimated processing times given by the police last year will unfortunately not hold up.

Long waiting times are in no one’s interest. We apologise for the longer processing times and ask for your patience!
