Renewal of Brexit residence permit card
Brexit permits are valid until further notice. However, the physical Brexit residence permit cards are only valid for 5 years at a time and must be replaced when they expire. This is because the chip of the card contains the card holder’s biometric identifiers. The card must be replaced every 5 years to ensure the data security of the chip. You can use your Brexit residence permit card to prove your right of residence.
- When you have the right of permanent residence and your card is about to expire, you need to apply for a new card. For instructions, see section ‘Three ways to renew your card’.
- You have the right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement if your Brexit residence permit card contains the reference ‘P SEU-sopimuksen 50 artikla’ or ‘P artikel 50 i EU-fördraget’.
- If you have a right of residence under the withdrawal agreement but not yet the right of permanent residence, apply for the right of permanent residence. When you are granted the right of permanent residence, you will also receive a new Brexit residence permit card. You can apply for the right of permanent residence under the withdrawal agreement after you have resided legally in Finland for a continuous period of 5 years.

- When you apply for a new residence permit card in the online service, visiting a service point of the Finnish Immigration Service is not always required if you meet the following conditions:
- You are using strong identification to log in to your Enter Finland account: you log in with your online banking credentials, mobile certificate or citizen certificate.
- You attach to the application the photograph retrieval code for your electronic passport photo, given to you by the photo shop that took the picture.
- You pay for the application before you submit it.
After you have sent your application, Enter Finland will tell you whether or not you need to visit a service point.
If you apply for a new residence permit card for your child who is under 18 years of age, you need to mention the child’s customer number so that the child can skip the service point visit.
Skipping a service point visit is not possible if you renew your card because your name has changed. However, you can still complete the Enter Finland application form in advance.
