Temporary protection has been extended by decision of the Council of the European Union until 4 March 2027. The residence permits that have been granted on the basis of temporary protection are expected to be extended by the Finnish Immigration Service in January 2026.
We will send you a letter once we have extended your residence permit for temporary protection. Save the letter for future reference. Authorities in Finland and banks and employers, for example, may ask to see the letter as proof of the extension of your residence permit.
You do not need to apply for a new residence permit card
Once the Finnish Immigration Service has extended your residence permit on the basis of temporary protection, your current residence permit card for temporary protection will remain valid until 4 March 2027 even if the expiry date printed on the card is 4 March 2023, 4 March 2024, 4 March 2025 or 4 March 2026. This means that you do not need to apply for a new residence permit card.
The residence permit cards are valid in Finland. If you travel to a country other than Finland, make sure you have the necessary travel documents, also for returning to Finland.
If there are changes to your name information
If there are changes to your name information or you have some other pressing need to renew your residence permit card, you can apply for a new residence permit card in the Enter Finland online service.
- If you apply for a residence permit card online, you must attach the photograph retrieval code for your digital passport photo to your application. You have to visit a photo shop to receive a photograph retrieval code for your passport photo.
Please note that the possibility to apply for a residence permit card on the basis of temporary protection online in Enter Finland will be paused as of 10 December 2025. The online application is expected to be back in use at the end of January or in the beginning of February 2026. We will issue a separate announcement once the online application is open again.
