In future, a permit entitling to permanent residence can be obtained through different application paths
In future, a permit entitling to permanent residence can be obtained through one of the following paths, which have different requirements regarding period of residence, language skills and work history.
- you have lived in Finland for at least 6 years under a continuous residence permit (A permit) or a Brexit permit, you have at least 2 years of work history in Finland, and your Finnish or Swedish language skills are at a satisfactory level.
- The language skills requirement does not apply to you if you are 65 years of age or older.
- you have lived in Finland for at least 4 years under a continuous residence permit (A permit) or a Brexit permit, and you have an annual income of over EUR 40,000 (you are not required to meet the language skills and work history requirements), or
- you have lived in Finland for at least 4 years under a continuous residence permit (A permit) or a Brexit permit, you have a master’s degree or a licentiate or doctoral degree recognised in Finland, and at least 2 years of work history in Finland (you are not required to meet the language skills requirement), or
- you have lived in Finland for at least 4 years under a continuous residence permit (A permit) or Brexit permit, you have at least 3 years of work history in Finland, and your Finnish or Swedish language skills are particularly good.
- you have completed a master’s degree, a licentiate or doctoral degree or a bachelor’s degree in Finland. Your Finnish or Swedish language skills are developing (you are not required to meet the work history requirement).
- you have lived in Finland for at least 5 years under a continuous residence permit (A permit) or Brexit permit, your Finnish or Swedish language skills are good and you have sufficient financial resources.
o If you have an EU Blue Card, your period of residence in Finland may in some cases also include residence in another EU country.
o There is no work history requirement for obtaining a P-EU permit.
