Finland and Afghanistan signed an agreement on 4 October 2016 to facilitate the return of those who have received a negative decision. The agreement took effect immediately when signed.

The agreement does not have any effects on the processing of asylum applications at the Finnish Immigration Service. Asylum applications are processed in the same way as before. If you get a positive asylum decision, you are allowed to stay in Finland.

If you get a negative asylum decision, you normally have 30 days to arrange for your return home. You can receive assistance for your return.

Assistance for voluntary return includes

  • return tickets for a regular flight to your home country
  • assistance that can be given either in cash or in kind. If the assistance is given in kind, this means that you are given different supplies or services, such as help with finding work, establishing your own company, starting your studies or finding an apartment.

You can ask more about voluntary return at your own reception centre and read more on www.migri.fi/return.

If you refuse to make arrangements for your return, the police will do this for you. When the police have made the necessary arrangements, you are returned to your home country.
