Brexit applicant: submit your application for a Brexit permit by 30 September 2021 to avoid complications regarding your residence

17.9.2021 13.16

The United Kingdom has left the European Union. Therefore, you need to apply for a right of residence under the withdrawal agreement (also known as the ‘Brexit permit’) on 30 September 2021 at the latest, if

  • you are a British citizen or the family member of a British citizen who resides in Finland
  • you have resided in Finland before 31 December 2020 and continued your residence in Finland after 31 December 2020.

If you do not submit your application on 30 September 2021 at the latest,

  • your residence in Finland is no longer legal
    • If you reside in Finland without a right of residence, you may be fined or, in extreme cases, even removed from the country.
  • you will likely need to apply for an extended permit if you wish to continue your residence in Finland.
    • The cost of an extended permit application (i.e. residence permit application) is much higher than that of a Brexit application. See the processing fees for applications.
  • your right to work will be interrupted
  • you will no longer have the right to study.

Submit your application using the Enter Finland service

If you submit your application using the Enter Finland online service, you can visit a service point of the Finnish Immigration Service to prove your identity after 30 September.

Using the online service is the fastest way to submit an application.

  • Please read the application instructions carefully.
  • Use our Brexit application finder, which will help you find the correct application form.
  • Make sure to include all required attachments. Requests for additional information will delay the processing of your application.

Applications for which we do not need to request additional information have the shortest processing times. Typically, such applications are submitted using the correct form, with all required attachments included.
