Student – peak time for applications continues until early autumn, remember to apply for your permit in time
Students submit a large amount of applications during the summer. If you are about to come to Finland to study:
- Apply for a residence permit as soon as your study place in a Finnish educational institution is confirmed.
- Submit your application online at https://e-asiointi.migri.fi.
- Include all the necessary attachments according to the instructions,
notice to degree students
notice to exchange students
Don’t forget health insurance and the requirement for means of support
The extent of the insurance coverage required depends on the duration of your studies.
- If your studies take less than two years (i.e. not more than 4 terms), you will need a private insurance which covers health care expenses up to 100,000 euros.
- If your studies take more than two years (i.e. more than 4 terms), you will need a private insurance which covers medical expenses up to 30,000 euros.
If you do not have an official scholarship or grant, you need to have the amount of money which you must have to meet the requirement for means of supporton your bank account. You must also present a bank statement showing your name.
Visit your local Finnish embassy or consulate after submitting your application
At the embassy or consulate you need to:
- give your fingerprints
- prove your identity
- present the original documents you are appending to your application.
Your application will only be processed after you have visited a Finnish embassy or consulate in person.

The Finnish Immigration Service processes all applications for students’ residence permits as high-priority applications. Applications are processed in the order they arrive, and emailing or calling the Finnish Immigration Service will not speed up the processing of your application. The Finnish Immigration Service also cannot fast-track your application for reasons such as flight tickets purchased in advance.
Information about the queues of residence permit applications for studies is published on the website of the Finnish Immigration Service. The information on the website is updated weekly. If you apply online, you can track the status of your own application in the e-service.
We will provide information on our website about exceptional situations or any changes in the processing times. We will also publish a separate bulletin if we are unable to issue decisions on residence permit applications for studies before the start of the autumn term.
