If you are returning to your home country: You can no longer get your passport from the Finnish Immigration Service but only from the police or at the border
If you cancel your asylum application and are returning to your home country voluntarily, please note that it is no longer possible to get your passport directly from the Finnish Immigration Service.
You will get your passport either from the police at the same time as the decision on the expiry of the asylum application is served on you or at the border control when you leave the country. Ask for your passport well in advance before the planned day of departure. It takes at least 8 weekdays for the passport to arrive at the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.
If you need a copy of the passport for buying plane tickets, ask the police for a copy when you cancel your application. You can also separately request a copy from the Finnish Immigration Service. Ask for the copy well in advance. The authorities may be very busy, which is why you may not necessarily get the copy on the same day.
If you do not have a passport
If you do not have a passport, you must get a temporary travel document for your home journey from the embassy of your home country.
Please note that if you travel to Helsinki to get your temporary travel document or passport, your reception centre cannot arrange your journey or your accommodation in Helsinki. Instead, you must take care of these arrangements by yourself in advance. It is a good idea to contact the embassy before you travel to Helsinki.
