When applying for a residence permit the partner in a personal relationship must have a secure income
A partner in an established intimate relationship cannot be granted a residence permit on the basis of family ties. This is because a partner in an established intimate relationship with a Finnish citizen or with a person granted a Finnish residence permit is not considered to be a family member.
In certain circumstances an established intimate relationship may be considered a reason for granting a temporary residence permit.
In such cases the livelihood of the residence permit applicant must be secured, for example through wage income, savings, or self-employed income. The applicant must be able to access these funds freely, for example through a personal bank account. The calculation of secured income does not include the income or savings of the partner in the established intimate relationship living in Finland.
The following conditions must also be fulfilled:
- The relationship has become established. Evidence of this can be considered to include, for example, previous cohabitation, or pregnancy.
- The partners in the established intimate relationship intend to continue to share their lives together in Finland.
