More accommodation places for asylum seekers also in Kotka, Kristiinankaupunki and Oravainen
The accommodation capacity of the reception centres in Kotka, Kristiinankaupunki and Oravainen was increased by a total of 140 places on 13 October 2014. After the addition, the reception centres have 150 accommodation places each. The accommodation capacity has been increased by renting the necessary number of apartments.
– The number of people seeking asylum in Finland has been on the rise in the past few months, says Veikko Pyykkönen, Senior Adviser at the Finnish Immigration Service. However, the rise in the number of asylum seekers has been moderate according to Pyykkönen.
Pyykkönen says that the global crises have not led to a spike in the number of asylum seekers in Finland. A total of 2,632 persons have sought asylum in Finland this year.
– We have had some asylum seekers from Ukraine and Syria, and it is always busy in the autumn season, says Pyykkönen.
– The occupancy rate is high at the reception centres, almost one hundred per cent. Therefore, we need to increase the capacity if the number of asylum seekers rises even a little, Pyykkönen continues.
