You may apply for a residence permit on the basis of family ties

You may apply for a residence permit on the basis of family ties if your family member lives in Finland or if you are applying for a residence permit at the same time with your family member. This family member is called a ‘sponsor’. This means a family member who already lives in Finland and with whom you are going to live together as a family.

  • If you are applying for a residence permit for your adopted child, apply for it by submitting this application: Residence permit application on the basis of adoption, OLE_ADO

The concept of family is narrower in Finland than in many other countries. The members of a family are defined by law. They are:

  • a spouse
  • a registered partner
  • a cohabiting partner
  • a person who has custody of a child under 18 years of age
  • a child.
