What are the grounds for asylum?

You may get asylum in Finland if you have a well-founded fear of being persecuted in your home country or your country of permanent residence because of your:

  • origin
  • religion
  • nationality
  • membership in a certain social group
  • political opinions

Another requirement is that you cannot rely on the protection of the authorities of your home country or country of permanent residence because of the persecution you fear.

The Finnish Immigration Service will evaluate whether you meet the grounds for getting asylum. The criteria for asylum are defined in the Finnish law and international agreements that Finland has adopted.
