Residence permit application for a guardian whose child has been granted international protection

Apply for a residence permit with this application if you are the parent or guardian of a child under 18 years of age and your child is living in Finland with a residence permit granted by Finland on the basis of international protection or temporary protection.

Your child’s residence permit has been granted on the basis of international protection if he or she:

  • is a quota refugee;
  • has been granted asylum; or
  • has been granted a residence permit on the basis of subsidiary protection.

Income requirement

You are not required to have sufficient financial resources if your child is under 18 years of age or if you meet 1 of the following 2conditions:

  • Your child has been granted asylum or refugee status as a quota refugee before 1 July 2016 and your family has been started before your child came to Finland.
  • Your child has been granted asylum or refugee status as a quota refugee on 1 July 2016 or after this date, and you are applying for a residence permit within 3 months after the Finnish Immigration Service made a decision on your child’s application. The 3 months are counted from the date your child was informed of the decision.

  • Decision on adoption (if the child is adopted) (must be legalised if not issued in the Nordic countries or in an EU Member State)
  • Divorce certificate (if the parents of the child are divorced) (must be legalised if not issued in the Nordic countries or in an EU Member State)
  • Death certificate (if one or both of the child’s parents have died) (must be legalised if not issued in the Nordic countries or in an EU Member State)

Right to work

You have an unrestricted right to work. You cannot start working before you get a residence permit.
