The Helsinki detention unit will become part of the Finnish Immigration Service on 1 January 2018
The Helsinki detention unit, located in Metsälä in Helsinki, will become part of the Finnish Immigration Service on 1 January 2018. The detention unit will be transferred to the Finnish Immigration Service from the City of Helsinki, which has been responsible for detention arrangements concerning some foreign nationals since 2002.
The Helsinki detention unit has 40 places for customers and a total of 38 staff.
The change, which will take place at the beginning of 2018, will not affect the unit's operational activities.
There are two detention units in Finland. In addition to the Helsinki detention unit, there is a detention unit in Joutseno which operates as part of the Joutseno reception centre. Both detention units will be run by the Finnish Immigration Service in the future.
