How travels affect your period of residence

Normal holiday trips do not affect your uninterrupted residence in Finland. Your continuous period of residence is interrupted if you move abroad or are away from Finland so regularly and so often that you are considered to stay mostly outside Finland.

Long periods of absence from Finland will interrupt your continuous period of residence. In this case, accumulated period of residence can be applied to your application. Your accumulated period of residence must be seven years in all before a decision is made on your citizenship application. The last two years you must have lived in Finland without interruption.

The reason why you have lived abroad is not relevant. If for instance you have been sent abroad on assignment by your Finnish employer, this will interrupt your continuous period of residence.
