A personal identity code can now be received without a separate application if a permit is granted to reside in Finland

Publication date 12.2.2019 8.09
Press release

If you are granted the right to residence in Finland (a residence permit, asylum, or you register as an EU citizen) on or after 1 February 2019, you will automatically be registered in the Finnish Population Information System. At that point, you will also receive a Finnish personal identity code.

This requires that you fulfil the preconditions for registration. One of the preconditions is that a Finnish authority has verified your identity.

Earlier, asylum seekers had to request for registration separately.

You can only receive a personal identity code once

If you have been issued a personal identity code in Finland earlier, enter it in your residence permit application. The personal identity code does not become obsolete and you can only receive it once.

You will see your personal identity code from your residence permit card or residence card

You can check your personal identity code from your residence permit card, residence card, or a registration extract from the Population Register Centre. The extract will be appended to your decision.

Remember to visit the Local Register Office

Receiving a personal identity code does not mean that you are automatically registered as a resident of a certain town or city, i.e. you will not be given domicile. For that reason and to register more detailed information on you, you must visit the Local Register Office of your place of residence.
