Reception centre client: payment cards will be out of action while they are being checked

Publication date 11.3.2025 14.00
Type:Press release

These checks will concern all clients who have received a prepaid card from the Finnish Immigration Service, both new and existing card holders. All account and card holders are checked regularly. The check is automated, and you do not need to do anything because of it.

When the check is in progress, you will not be able to use your card or the account linked to it until the check has been finished. If your card and account do not work, you should contact your reception centre.

The reception centre will take care of your basic needs during the check

If you have no income and you cannot take care of your basic needs during the check, the reception centre will help you get food, medicines and other things you need.

However, you should remember that if the check takes longer than usual, the financial support the reception centre gives you could reduce the reception allowance that you may receive later.

The reception centre can also take care of your basic needs if you are employed but cannot use your prepaid card because of the check. You may have to pay back the financial support you receive later when your salary gets paid.

Contact your reception centre if you need more information about looking after your basic needs during the checks.

Why are the checks carried out?

Under the Act on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing, a bank or card supplier must know its customers. This includes screening politically exposed persons (PEPs) and identifying persons subject to national or international economic sanctions.

The checks are related to PEPs and sanctions. The policy of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs is that reception allowance may not be paid by using any means while a recipient’s statutory PEP and sanctions check is in progress.

The checks are carried out by Enfuce, which is the card supplier. The sanctions check normally takes 1-3 working days, but for different reasons it may also take longer than this.
