The Finnish Immigration Service has extended all residence permits on the basis of temporary protection to be valid until 4 March 2024. Temporary protection is intended for people fleeing from Ukraine. Customers will not need to apply for an extension to their residence permit or a new residence permit card.

In future, we will issue all residence permits on the basis of temporary protection to be valid until 4 March 2024.

Residence permit cards issued on the basis of temporary protection will remain valid until 4 March 2024

All residence permit cards issued on the basis of temporary protection will remain valid until 4 March 2024, even if the date on the card has expired. Those receiving temporary protection do not need to apply for a new residence permit card and their stay in Finland will be legal even if their residence permit cards have an expired date.

Those receiving temporary protection will also retain their right to work until 4 March 2024, even if the date on their card has expired.

However, if a customer wishes to have a new residence permit card, they may apply for one from the Finnish Immigration Service. Learn more on our website Extension of temporary protection.

How do you know if a residence permit card has been issued on the basis of temporary protection?

The legal provision on which the holder's right to work is based is printed on the residence permit card. Residence permit cards issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection can be distinguished from other cards by looking at the legal provision regarding the right to work. Residence permit card holders who have been granted temporary protection have either ‘UlkL 78 § 3 mom. 3 k.’ or ‘UlkL 81 a § 1 mom. 3 k.’ printed on their card. These provisions only apply to holders of a residence permit issued on the basis of temporary protection.
