You need to have insurance when applying for a residence permit for studies. If the duration of your studies in Finland is less than two years, your insurance must cover medical and pharmaceutical expenses up to 100,000 euro. If the duration of your studies in Finland is at least two years, your insurance must cover pharmaceutical expenses up to 30,000 euro.

The certificate of insurance must include the following:

  • your personal details
  • period of validity of the insurance
  • area of validity of the insurance
  • insurance coverage and benefit sums

Please also note that your insurance has to already be valid when you arrive in Finland. Please ensure that the validity period of your insurance is sufficient. Please also remember that you need to have insurance during your whole stay in Finland. If you are planning to study in Finland for at least a year, you need insurance for one year.

If you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), you do not need separate insurance.

Provide the necessary information when submitting your application

The processing of your application will be faster if you attach the right documents about your study place, means of support and insurance as well as a copy of your passport when submitting your application. Requests for information slow down the processing of your application.

Please also use the checklist for students applying for a residence permit.

Thousands of international students who are due to begin their studies in Finland in the autumn of 2016 will be applying for residence permits during the summer. This will cause delays in the processing of residence permit applications submitted by students.

You can find up-to-date information about the delays here.
