Ninety-one additional places in reception centres
The accommodation capacity of the reception centres in Turku and Rovaniemi was increased by 80 places on 12 January and 1 February 2015.
Espoo Group and Family Group Home and Group Home Koivula in Kotka, which are intended for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers, will receive seven and four additional places respectively.
After the addition, there will be
- 180 places in Turku,
- 150 places in Rovaniemi,
- 21 places in Espoo (as of 1 March) and
- 18 places in Kotka (as of 1 April).
“The need for additional accommodation places is followed closely, and we can increase the reception capacity when needed,” says Senior Adviser Visa Knape from the Finnish Immigration Service.
According to the annual statistics, the number of asylum seekers in Finland increased last year.
The occupancy rate at the reception centres was nearly one hundred per cent at the end of 2014 and at the beginning of 2015. “Even a small change in the number of asylum seekers requires additional places,” Knape says.
