Finnish citizenship declaration can now be submitted online
The e-services of the Finnish Immigration Service have expanded to cover all citizenship declarations.
You may acquire Finnish citizenship by citizenship declaration if certain conditions are met. You may acquire Finnish citizenship by declaration if you are
- a child born abroad out of wedlock to a Finnish father (form KAN4)
- an adopted child aged 12 to 17 if at least one of the adoptive parents is a Finnish citizen (form KAN5)
- a young person aged 18 to 22 (form KAN6)
- a former Finnish citizen (form KAN7)
- a citizen of a Nordic country (Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark) (form KAN8).
E-services are the quickest way to receive a decision
Using e-services is the quickest way to receive a decision for yourself or a child in your care. Please ensure that you
- answer all the questions on the application form
- attach all the required documents
- pay the processing fee
You can also use e-services to
- add any further information to your declaration
- follow the progress of your declaration
- receive a notification when the decision has been made
You can choose to receive notification by e-mail or SMS of any messages received on your user account, such as requests for clarification or notices of decisions.
In the electronic service, you can pay for the application via the most common Finnish online banks or by using a credit card.
A visit to the embassy or the police is required
Even if you submit your application online, you and any children in your care will have to visit the Finnish embassy or the police. This is necessary in order for you to verify your identity and to present the original copies of supplements needed for your application.
An electronic Finnish citizenship declaration cannot be processed until you have visited an embassy or a police service point. You can visit the police regardless of the type of declaration. You can visit an embassy if you are a child born abroad out of wedlock to a Finnish father, an adopted child who has reached the age of 12 if at least one of the adoptive parents is a Finnish citizen, or a former Finnish citizen.
Despite the visit requirement, e-services are the quickest way to receive a decision. Time is saved especially during the initial phase of the application process: while a paper form needs to be forwarded from the embassy or the police, the electronic form is immediately received by the Finnish Immigration Service.
How do I find e-services?
