West bank palestinians still under pressure
In 2014, 114 stateless persons or people with unknown citizenship applied for asylum in Finland. Several of the asylum interview protocols completed in 2014 concerned Palestinians from the West Bank.
“Palestinians still face difficult conditions in camps on the West Bank. Most of the camps suffer from poor sewage and water supply networks, unemployment, overpopulation and incursions by the Israeli army,” comments Project Manager Arno Tanner.
Suppressed demonstrations, and house searches
According to a new public theme report, Palestinians demonstrate against abuses but Israeli forces often use excessive force to suppress such demonstrations. Israeli forces perform house searches in which they may assault family members of persons placed under arrest. Minors are also being arrested.
Problems caused by both Israeli and Palestinian security forces and by settlers
Palestinians are disappointed that their own officials do not intervene in the activities of those from Israel. Palestinians are also being arrested by the Palestinian authorities. In many cases, a person arrested by the Israeli security forces is rearrested by the Palestinian authorities upon release. Reporters as well as demonstrators are being arrested.
Palestinians are experiencing harassment at the hands of settlers as well as Israeli and Palestinian security forces. Settlers have been known to destroy Palestinians’ crops, homes and mosques and to harass children making their way to school.
“The number of settlers has continuously increased and there have been incidents in which Palestinians have had to abandon their homes as a result,” adds Tanner.
Themes for country information reports based on asylum interview protocols
The current theme report is one outcome of the Suuntaus project. Suuntaus is a country information development project funded by the European Refugee Fund. The Country Information Service of the Finnish Immigration Service continuously collects information on the countries of origin of asylum seekers. The information obtained assists immigration officials when making permit decisions.
